On this unforgettable trip we will explore some of the most beautiful places to visit in Oaxaca City, while enjoying the magical “Day of the Death” festivity that only takes place once a year .
Meet at 7:30 AM for breakfast and drive one hour to a small town located in the middle of the sierra called Benito Juarez. At Juarez, we will make a five hour hike through the forest reaching a ten meter waterfall. Afterwards, we will have lunch cooked by the local’s. Once we are satisfied we will head up to a scenic viewpoint where we will appreciate the fantastic sierra sunset. Later, we will return to the cozy mountain cabins where we will have dinner cooked by the locals and spend the night.
After the tour we will head to our hotel which is one of the best hotels in Mexico in its category.
Meet at 7:30 AM for breakfast and drive 20 min to the starting point of the Trek. This Trek takes five hours going through paths in a pine forest made by local farmers that connect different communities in the Sierra. We Will have lunch at 1:00 PM and in the afternoon, there is an optional hike to see the sunset or stay in the mountain cabins, relax, and have dinner at night.
After our breakfast we will drive towards Santiago Matalan, “La Meca” of artisanal Mezcal. There, we are going to learn the ancient techniques for the elaboration of one of the oldest spirits on the planet. After witnessing Mezcal’s elaboration process we have prepared a lunch in which we will taste Oaxaca´s most traditional plate, mole which is made out of more than thirty-five different ingredients. Once our stomachs are full we will go to Hierve El Agua, which is a set of petrified walls where we can swim and enjoy the whole Sierra. On our way back to our hotel at Oaxaca City we will visit Mitla, a very important Zapotecan archeological site.
Meet at 8:00 AM for breakfast in the local market with fresh ingredients, we will then head to San Martin Tilcajete, the town that claims to be the first artisans of Alebrijes, which are cardboard monsters.
The next stop is Monte Alban, the most important archeological site in Oaxaca dating back to 500 a.c. After Monte Alban, we will head to Santa María Atzompa, an archeological city similar to that of Monte Alban. However, in this town we will experience the beginning of Dia de Muertos celebration, witnessing many altars decorated with cempasúchil flowers and pictures of the dead people they are praying to. After sunset we will head to Xoxocotlan´s cemetery to see more altars and then go to Oaxaca City to refresh and have supper.
After breakfast, we will spend this day in Oaxaca City, one of the best travel destinations in Mexico and the richest city in Mexico in terms of gastronomy, culture, art and architecture. We will visit the botanic garden, churches, the zocalo and all of the good spots in Oaxaca Centro. At night we will celebrate day of the dead starting by painting our faces with skull designs. Afterwards we will walk the streets surrounded by the local people towards the municipal graveyard. For sure an amazing experience if you want to have an unforgettable vacation in Mexico
We will have breakfast at 8:00 AM, so that we can leave early to visit some of the Pueblos Mancomunados, which are little towns in the outskirts of Oaxaca city, these pueblos belong to the Zapotec culture and have impressive churches and a similar yet different culture and thus enabling us to witness the contrast between a big city celebration of the dead and that of the small towns. Once we visit the towns we will have lunch at a famous restaurant in San Agustin Etla and head back to the hotel. The afternoon is free to visit Oaxaca City on your own.
Breakfast at 8:00 AM, and departure to the airport to return home unless you have booked an extension to your trip
